Program Note

The Muses is a suite of nine short character pieces composed in December of 2007 and dedicated to Flying Forms: Marc Levine, baroque violin; Marie Dalby, viola da gamba; and Tami Morse, harpsichord.

II. a string duet to Erato, muse of erotic poetry.
III. a harpsichord solo to Thalia, muse of comedy.
IV. a motet to Polyhymnia, muse of sacred song.
V. a Courante to Terpsichore, muse of dance.
VI. a Recitative and Arietta to Euterpe, muse of music.
VII. a lute solo to Melpomene, muse of tragedy.
VIII. a duet to Clio, muse of history.
IX. a meditation to Urania, muse of astronomy.
